Netflix ads plan: Bad news for users in long term

Image
Tl;DR: Netflix success with ads plan could mean a less worthy experience (more ads, less premium content available) for its ads plan users or a more expensive viewing experience (potential price increases for full paid plans) for paid users. Netflix has launched an ads based plan tier. An ads based tier plan will allow more users to get entertained by Neftlix content, but in the long run it may not be good for users. The plan is GBP 4.99 in UK.  Firstly, why a fee? Why not zero and be like youtube ? Youtube even also allows to skip ads, which is not going to be an option here.Till now two competitive models have existed in the online video space - ads and subscription based. This has provided a clear opportunity for users to make a choice. Secondly, Netflix says an average of about 4 minutes of ads per hour. While this information is good for users to make a decision, things to note: This is an average - so you might see more, if Netflix is widely popular with advertisers.  ...

Product review - Plum (UK)

Image
For many years now, I have been looking for help with my personal finances. This is something that I fret about daily, but I don't want to invest time in managing them nor have I been able to find a good solution. This is why plum caught my attention when I read the news about its fundraise . So, here is my assessment about the product.  TL;DR Good for newbies to personal finance.  Personal finance has many interesting problems to solve. Plum is taking punt in all directions - income/ expense reporting, expense management, investment management   IMHO It may make sense to hone the focus on one area initially, and a good mature future app will tackle all the above areas. IIUC, Plum may be focusing on investment management, which is a good direction Disclosure: I have used the product for a week in Nov-2021 User problem Individuals / Families are not able to manage expenses & investments easily.  It is getting complicated to manage investments due to complexi...

Fast laughs from Netflix Recently, Netflix launched a “fast laughs” tab in their mobile device (at least here in the UK).  It seems to be an interesting feature, possibly targeting watch time increase. Traditionally,  trailers / previews along with personalized recommendations have been the method to increase viewers engagement.  Personally, when I am looking for something new to watch, my appetite for “try” is extremely low. Therefore, when I see a  show recommended, I need some good “incentive” to start watching the show.  word of mouth recommendation,  an extremely interesting trailer or  Topmost rating (particularly on imdb)  Therefore, this new feature is particularly interesting and I hope that there are plans to extend beyond just the comedy genre. It may become additional content on netflix, rivaling youtube, which has loads of interesting content on shows. Top scenes from the show.  Top dialogues, eg Al Pacino's speech in the ...

Amazon Prime Video

Last year I discontinued Netflix for various reasons nothing to do with the service itself. When the covid-19 lockdown started, the thought of renewal crossed my mind. Though one day while ordering on Amazon prime, I realized about Prime video. This is how the Prime Video started for me. TL;DR : Bundled with Amazon prime, It is a damn good video service. With Amazon prime becoming an absolute must now (and in future) due to the current covid-19 situation, Prime video would get viewers mind-share automatically. Personally after 5 months of “binging” it, I probably need one more video subscription soon! What could be better - just some examples: User interface - it is good enough though not the best The “online marketplace” type search does not work for video. Lot of screen space is wasted as white space, relevant information is often missing and there are not enough results on one page.  You can see a title repeating itself across multiple categories, which is fair but the extent of...

Data data everywhere..

Data data everywhere.. The title of this post is adopted from lines of the poem “ The Rime of the Ancient Mariner . The poem is about a sailor on a becalmed ship in the sea. His dilemma: he is surrounded by salt water that he cannot drink to quench his thirst. I feel pretty much the same about the flood of personal data that we have in today's digital world. This is not about privacy. The digitization of human life has made it easy to collect personal data, and a lot of it.  We have apps which collect fitness data. Some collect our meals data and few collect health records. Apps can now connect to our bank account and provide automated spending reports, others can manage investments or some other taxation. Even an electric toothbrush is fairly digitized. It can sync brushing data, using bluetooth with a mobile app.  A great deal of effort is being carried out to make the data in these apps actionable. For example, a fitness app can suggest work-outs, remind us to walk to reach...
